Hypnotherapy for Anxiety
Anxiety is not a weakness. It is often a nervous system that has been on high alert for too long, racing thoughts, tight chest, restless sleep, or a constant undercurrent of unease that never fully switches off.
Through gentle, trauma-informed online hypnotherapy, we work with the subconscious patterns and nervous-system responses driving your anxiety. Rather than forcing calm, we create safety first. From that place, clarity and confidence begin to return naturally.
Sessions are suitable for generalised anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, anticipatory worry, and the particular flavour of anxiety that doesn't have a clear cause but shapes everything
Signs of anxiety you might recognise
Anxiety doesn't always look like a panic attack. For many people, it's quieter and more persistent, a low hum of unease that's been there so long it feels normal. You may recognise it in some of these:
-
Racing or looping thoughts - particularly at night, or in the shower, or any time the mind isn't actively occupied.
-
A physical sense of being "on"- tight chest, shallow breathing, tense shoulders, restless legs, or a flutter in the stomach that never fully settles.
-
Anticipatory worry - spending more time dreading what might happen than actually experiencing what is happening.
-
Avoidance - saying no to things that matter, or reshaping your life to minimise the things that trigger the anxiety.
-
Difficulty being present - your mind is five steps ahead, rehearsing or replaying, rarely actually in the room.
-
Panic attacks or panic-like symptoms - sudden surges of fear, heart racing, feeling like you can't breathe or something terrible is about to happen.
-
Sleep disruption - lying awake with a busy mind, or waking in the small hours with a surge of worry.
If several of these feel familiar, you are not broken. Your nervous system has learned that being on high alert is safer than relaxing. That learning can be gently, safely updated, which is exactly what hypnotherapy does.
How hypnotherapy helps with anxiety
Anxiety lives in the subconscious and the nervous system, which is why understanding your anxiety intellectually rarely makes it stop. You can know, consciously, that you're safe and still feel the fear response rising in your body. That gap between what you know and what you feel is where hypnotherapy works.
In a calm, focused state, we work directly with the parts of the mind and body generating, the anxiety response. We gently update the underlying triggers, regulate an over-activated nervous system, and help your body learn, at a deep level, that it is safe to soften. This isn't about suppressing the anxiety or overriding it with willpower, it's about changing the signal underneath.
The research is strong. Meta-analyses have consistently found hypnotherapy effective for reducing anxiety symptoms, both as a standalone approach and alongside other therapies. Clinically, many clients notice a meaningful shift within the first two or three sessions, less reactive, calmer in their body, more able to be present in their own life.
What an anxiety hypnotherapy session looks like
The first session is 90 minutes. We start with a conversation about what you're experiencing, what you've already tried, and what you'd like to be different. There's no clinical interview, just a grounded, honest exchange at your pace.
From there, we move into the hypnotherapy work itself. You sit back or lie down, eyes closed, and I guide you into a relaxed, focused state using voice and breath. You remain fully aware throughout and can come out of the state at any time. You will not be asked to relive anything that doesn't feel safe to revisit, safety and pace are the priority, always.
Subsequent sessions are usually 60 minutes. Between sessions, you may be given a short audio recording or a simple grounding practice to use when anxiety rises during the week. Many clients start using these tools within days and notice a difference quickly.
A note for people who are nervous about the hypnotherapy itself: that's completely normal, and common. The first session includes space for any questions or worries, and we move only as fast as feels right. Nothing happens to you. You remain in charge throughout.
Who this work is for (and who it isn't)
This work tends to help most when:
-
You've had anxiety long enough that talking about it or understanding it hasn't been enough to shift it
-
You want to work with the underlying patterns, not just manage the symptoms
-
You're open to the idea that meaningful change can happen below the level of conscious thought
-
You're not in acute crisis, a stable base is needed for this kind of inner work
This work may not be the right starting point if:
-
You are experiencing severe panic disorder, agoraphobia, or acute anxiety that needs urgent medical support, in which case, please work with your GP or a psychiatrist first, and consider adding hypnotherapy once you have a stable foundation
-
You are on medication that affects consciousness (sedatives, strong painkillers) and haven't cleared complementary therapy with your prescribing doctor
-
You're hoping for a single-session cure, anxiety that has been present for years usually needs four to six sessions to genuinely shift
⚠ Hypnotherapy complements and does not replace medical or psychological care. If your anxiety feels overwhelming or unmanageable, please speak with your GP or a mental health professional alongside this work. If you are in crisis, please contact SADAG on 0800 567 567 (24-hour, South Africa) or your nearest emergency service.
Frequently asked questions about anxiety hypnotherapy
How many sessions will I need for anxiety?
Most clients see meaningful change in four to six sessions, though this varies with how long the anxiety has been there and how layered it is. Simple, situation-specific anxiety can shift in two or three sessions. Long-standing, generalised anxiety often takes longer. After the first session, I'll give you a realistic estimate based on what we're working with.
Can hypnotherapy help with panic attacks?
Yes. Panic attacks are one of the clearer wins for hypnotherapy because they're usually driven by a specific set of subconscious triggers and nervous-system responses, exactly the level hypnotherapy works at. Many clients notice fewer and less intense panic attacks within the first few sessions, and often fully resolve them over a longer course of work.
I take anxiety medication. Can I still do hypnotherapy?
In most cases, yes, hypnotherapy works alongside medication, not instead of it. Please continue taking any prescribed medication and let your prescribing doctor know you're adding hypnotherapy as a complementary support. If there are any concerns, we can discuss this in the discovery call. Never stop medication suddenly or without medical supervision.
What's the difference between hypnotherapy and CBT for anxiety?
Both can be effective and they work differently. CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) works primarily at the conscious level, identifying thought patterns and developing strategies to change them. Hypnotherapy works below that, with the subconscious patterns and nervous-system responses underneath the thoughts. Many clients benefit from both, at different stages of their healing.
Is online hypnotherapy effective for anxiety?
Yes. Research consistently finds equivalent outcomes for online and in-person hypnotherapy. The work happens through voice, focus, and the therapeutic relationship, all of which translate fully to a secure video platform. Many anxious clients actually prefer online sessions because doing the work from the comfort of their own space reduces the extra activation of travel and a new environment.
Ready to begin?
The most practical starting point is a free 15-minute discovery call. It's a relaxed conversation where you can ask anything, describe what's been going on, and find out whether the approach feels right for you. No pressure, no obligation and for many clients, just having the conversation starts to soften something.
