How Does Online Hypnotherapy Work?

If you've never done hypnotherapy before, or if it's been a while, it's natural to want to know what you're signing up for. This page walks you through what a session looks like from start to finish, so you know exactly what to expect before booking.

Nothing here is meant to replace the feeling of doing the work. But knowing the practical side can remove a real pre-booking hesitation, and that's worth spelling out clearly.

Before your first session

Once you book, you'll receive a confirmation email with everything you need, the date and time (in your time zone), the link to the session, and a short form asking a few practical questions. The form takes about 10 minutes to complete and helps me understand where you are and what you'd like to work on before we meet.

You don't need to prepare anything else. No reading, no exercise, no mental warm-up. If you're nervous about the first session, that's not only normal, but it’s also helpful information for us to work with.

What you need on your end

Online hypnotherapy is genuinely equivalent to in-person work, but the setup does make a difference. A few simple things help:

  • A quiet, private space where you won't be interrupted. A bedroom, a closed office, or anywhere you feel comfortable being still for the duration of the session.

  • A stable internet connection. Video or audio quality matters more than usual because we rely on voice and pacing. If your connection is unpredictable, close other browser tabs and devices before we start.

  • Headphones (recommended but not required). They deepen the experience and reduce ambient distraction. Any headphones work, you don't need noise-cancelling or anything fancy.

  • Somewhere to lie down or recline. A bed, a sofa, or a reclining chair is ideal. Sitting upright works too, but most people find the work easier when their body is fully supported.

  • Water nearby and something warm to wear if you tend to get cold when still, the body sometimes cools down in deeply relaxed states.

  • Your phone on silent or airplane mode, and other devices are off. The fewer interruptions, the deeper the work can go.

No preparation beyond this is needed. You don't have to meditate beforehand, journal, or be in any state of mind. Just arrive as you are.

Which platform we use

Sessions are held on WhatsApp video call. WhatsApp was chosen because it's reliable, works well on varied internet conditions, offers genuine end-to-end encryption for privacy, and is already installed on almost every phone, no new app to learn, no login to set up.

Before your first session, I'll send you a WhatsApp message to confirm the connection and save each other's numbers. Sessions then start with a simple video call at the booked time.

What happens in the first session

The first session is 90 minutes. It has three phases, which flow naturally into each other.

Phase 1: Conversation (approximately 30-40 minutes)

We start with a grounded, unhurried conversation. There are no clinical interviews and no expectation that you will have your story perfectly organised. I'll ask about what brought you here, what you'd like to work on, what you've tried before, and what you're hoping might be different. You can share as much or as little as feel right as we're getting the shape of what matters, not a full history.

This part also includes space for your questions. If there's anything about the process, you're uncertain about, this is the time to ask. Nothing is a silly question.

Phase 2: The hypnotherapy itself (approximately 30-40 minutes)

When we move into the hypnotherapy part of the session, you'll settle into whatever position feels most comfortable, usually lying back or reclining, eyes closed. I'll guide you into a relaxed, focused state using voice, breath, and imagery.

Most clients describe this state as similar to the drowsy, peaceful moment just before sleep, or the kind of focused absorption you feel when deeply engaged in a film or a book. You remain aware throughout. You can hear me. You know where you are. You could open your eyes and speak at any moment if you needed to. You're not unconscious, and you're not being "made" to do anything, hypnotherapy works with you, not with you.

From that state, we begin working with whatever you came in for, gently, at the pace your system can comfortably handle.

Phase 3: Closing (approximately 10-15 minutes)

I'll guide you gently out of the hypnotherapy state, giving you a few minutes to fully return before we talk. We'll briefly discuss what came up, any next steps, and the practical rhythm of any follow-up sessions. No homework is pushed on by you, between-session practices are always optional.

Subsequent sessions

Follow-up sessions are 60 minutes. The structure is similar — a short catch-up conversation (10-15 minutes), the hypnotherapy work itself (35-40 minutes) and closing (5-10 minutes) but we go deeper faster, because we've already established the ground.

Between sessions, most clients receive a short audio recording tailored to the work we've been doing. These are optional and designed to be used in the moments they'd be most supportive, often at bedtime, or before a specific trigger. Many clients find the recordings become a gentle anchor between sessions.

Session frequency is yours to set. Some clients prefer weekly sessions during the most active period of the work, then space them out as things settle. Others prefer fortnightly from the start. We'll talk about what rhythm makes sense for you, and it can always be adjusted.

Common concerns, answered honestly

What if I can't be hypnotised?

This is the most common worry, and the honest answer is: hypnotherapy isn't something that happens to you against your will. It's a focused, relaxed state that almost everyone can enter with the right guidance. There's no "being put under" in the dramatic way films suggest. If anything, the people most worried about whether they'll be able to "do it" usually have no trouble at all, because the worry itself shows a mind that's already paying attention.

What if I fall asleep?

Some clients do, particularly if they've been sleep-deprived. It's completely fine and doesn't reduce the effectiveness of the work, the subconscious continues responding even if the conscious mind drifts off. If it happens, I'll gently bring you back. Most clients don't fully fall asleep, though; the state is more like a deeply restful wakefulness than actual sleep.

What if I'm nervous about the hypnotherapy part?

Completely normal, and common. The first session always includes space to ask questions, and we move only at the pace that feels right to you. You're in charge throughout, at any point, in any session, you can pause, open your eyes, change direction, or end the state. Nothing happens to you. Nothing is done to you. The work is collaborative from start to finish.

What if something difficult comes up?

The work is paced gently and we don't force anything. If something emotional surfaces, we have time and tools to meet it, with care, not pressure. You won't be taken anywhere you're not ready to go, and you can always signal (verbally or by simply opening your eyes) that you need to pause or step back. Safety is the priority, always.

What about privacy and confidentiality?

Sessions are private and confidential, held over encrypted video platforms. Session notes are kept securely, in compliance with POPIA (South Africa) and UK GDPR. You can read the full privacy policy for details on how your information is handled, stored, and protected. If confidentiality is a concern for you, particularly if you're uncertain about who else in your household might overhear, we can discuss practical solutions during the discovery call.

What if my internet cuts out mid-session?

It happens occasionally. If we lose connection briefly, we simply reconnect and pick up. If the connection is too unstable to continue meaningfully, we'll reschedule, you won't be charged for a session that couldn't happen. The session link stays active for the full booked period, so reconnecting takes seconds.

I'm in a different time zone. Does that work?

Yes. Online hypnotherapy makes international sessions genuinely easy. The confirmation email always shows your session time in your local time zone, and I work with clients across several time zones. If you're outside South Africa, let me know when booking so we can find times that work sustainably for both of us.

Ready to book a session?

If this has answered your questions and you'd like to go ahead, the most practical first step is a free 15-minute discovery call. It's a short conversation, with no pressure, no obligation, where we can discuss what you're working with and whether this approach feels right for you.
